Intellipure's Allergen Report April 2025

There’s no denying that spring is now here across the United States. Flowers are in full bloom and tree pollen is out in full force across the nation. Areas such as the southeast are already experiencing pollen drifts and yellow clouds floating through the warm afternoon air. Luckily spring showers are also popping up to help bring much needed relief. Spring also means more outdoor activity like gardening, mowing, and other yard work that can stir up particulates in the air. Make sure to keep an eye on your local air quality before heading outside to work on your new yard project or get in some exercise.

Here are the typical pollens that can be found across the United States this April:

Northeast

Tree pollen: Alder, American Elm, Ash, Birch, Cedar, Cottonwood, Juniper, Maple, Mulberry, Oak, Pecan, Sycamore
Grass pollen: Typically none in measurable quantity.

Kicking Up Dust

Spring’s warmer weather brings a lot of activities that cause increases in airborne dust levels. Agriculture activity like tilling and soil prep brings dirt and chemicals into the air that can affect nearby areas. As snow melts it releases all the nasty things it collected over the winter, which get blown around as everything dries out. Since plants haven’t started growing yet, wind erosion picks up dirt from the ground and carries it aloft. Inside people are digging into spaces that haven’t been touched in months, stirring up accumulated dust, mold spores, and pet dander into the air. All this leads to an increase in ultrafine particulates in the air both inside and outside. Make sure to check your local air quality before heading out for the day, especially if you have asthma or COPD. Don't forget that outdoor air pollution is eventually indoor air pollution, so it is wise to use a high-quality air purifier to protect your own indoor air quality.

Don’t Let Pet Hair Take Over This Spring

Your furry friend spent the winter building up a nice, warm coat to keep them cozy during the cold months. But now your cat or dog is feeling the spring sunshine and their winter coat is heading for the floor. If you have pets it’s a good idea to get ahead of the spring shed by being prepared. Get a good pet brush that works well for your pet’s coat type. Consider using a shedding blade, which is a great way to remove loose fur quickly. It is also wise to give your pet a bath once it is clear that springtime shedding has begun. Brush your pet before bathing to remove loose fur, mats, and tangles. After the bath you should also brush your pet to help distribute their nature oils throughout the fur. Of course your local groomer is more than happy to handle this if you prefer to drop off your furry friend for a day at the spa.

Hurricane Season Starts Outside. The Air Prep Starts at Home.

Hurricane Season Starts Outside. The Air Prep Starts at Home.

Hurricane prep usually starts with the obvious: batteries, bottled water, flashlights, medications, and a plan for where to go if conditions turn dangerous. But hurricane season home preparation should also include the air inside your home.

I've lived in Florida my whole life, so hurricane prep feels almost like a seasonal ritual. Still, indoor air can be easy to overlook when there are shutters to hang and supplies to track down.

Outside In: How Your Yard Affects Your Indoor Air Quality

Counterintuitively, a big part of maintaining good indoor air quality (IAQ) is being more mindful of the air outside your home. That's because half of what's in the air outside can make its way inside [1][1].

From pollen and mold spores to pesticides and other lawn treatments, lots of different outdoor contaminants find their way into the air you breathe when you're chilling on the couch, eating lunch at the kitchen table, or even tucked under the covers in bed.

Summer Staples That Threaten Clean Indoor Air

Summer Staples That Threaten Clean Indoor Air

Summer is all about getting outside and having fun, but for many families, it also means a rush of indoor air pollutants that go largely unnoticed.

From sunscreen sprays to insect repellents to beachy scented candles, the products we use to help us enjoy summer can measurably degrade our indoor air quality (IAQ). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from these everyday items can accumulate to concentrations much higher indoors than outdoors, triggering everything from mild irritation to more serious long-term health consequences [1][1]

The Smoky Side of Summer

The Smoky Side of Summer

Grills firing up. Fireworks cracking overhead. Citronella candles glowing on the patio. Personally, I'm excited for the festivities. But some of summer's most familiar moments come with a little smoke.

We usually think of these as outdoor activities, which makes them feel separate from the air inside our homes. But your indoor air doesn't exist in a hermetically-sealed bubble. Smoke can drift through open doors, screened porches, cracked windows, attached garages, and nearby air intakes. And once those tiny particles make their way inside, they can linger longer than the fun.
