Protect Your Home from COVID-19

How can you protect your home from COVID-19?

Our shared crisis is having a wide-ranging impact on our world. According to Green Biz, social distancing and self-isolation have drastically reduced air pollution. But while it is cleaning some of our air outdoors? What is happening in our homes? COVID-19 might have us cooped up inside, but it can't defeat us if we're taking care of ourselves mentally and physically. By spending most of our time indoors, we need to be mindful of air quality.

According to Jane Clougherty, from the department of environmental and occupational health at Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health: "Right off the bat, it's important to know that indoor air quality is not necessarily better than outdoor, the air quality can be complicated by traffic and industry nearby that comes inside through leaks in the home, as well as burning candles or incense, cooking on stovetops and more." What can we do? Installing quality air purification systems are incredibly helpful, but not possible for everyone. Here are some tips to help you get through this crisis with clean air and a lower risk of COVID-19 infection.

Filter Upkeep

Regularly Clean and Disinfect Your Home

As we are facing bigger risks, we need to stay on top of the surfaces in our home. We need to do more than just dust, but wipe down surfaces. Here's a great guide from the CDC on how to keep your home as clean as possible.

Create Air Flow

By opening windows and doors throughout your home, you can create a flow of air that will improve internal circulation and keep air cleaner. When cooking on an unvented stove, particles can become trapped and circulate in your home

Go Outside

Whether walking around your yard or walking around the block (obeying social distance guidelines), will help your lungs take in clean air. While your home needs ventilation, your body does too.

Leave Your Shoes at the Door

If you've been outside, we can track particles and dirt into our home, and it doesn't just dirty our floors, but our air, too.

Take it Easy on the Air Fresheners

Air fresheners may smell good, but they can saturate our indoor air with other particulates that aren't healthy for us. Use them sparingly, and opt for all-natural if possible.

Air Filters Can Help

Having air filters that are clean can be useful and improve air quality.

Hurricane Season Starts Outside. The Air Prep Starts at Home.

Hurricane Season Starts Outside. The Air Prep Starts at Home.

Hurricane prep usually starts with the obvious: batteries, bottled water, flashlights, medications, and a plan for where to go if conditions turn dangerous. But hurricane season home preparation should also include the air inside your home.

I've lived in Florida my whole life, so hurricane prep feels almost like a seasonal ritual. Still, indoor air can be easy to overlook when there are shutters to hang and supplies to track down.

Outside In: How Your Yard Affects Your Indoor Air Quality

Outside In: How Your Yard Affects Your Indoor Air Quality

Counterintuitively, a big part of maintaining good indoor air quality (IAQ) is being more mindful of the air outside your home. That's because half of what's in the air outside can make its way inside [1][1].

From pollen and mold spores to pesticides and other lawn treatments, lots of different outdoor contaminants find their way into the air you breathe when you're chilling on the couch, eating lunch at the kitchen table, or even tucked under the covers in bed.

Summer Staples That Threaten Clean Indoor Air

Summer Staples That Threaten Clean Indoor Air

Summer is all about getting outside and having fun, but for many families, it also means a rush of indoor air pollutants that go largely unnoticed.

From sunscreen sprays to insect repellents to beachy scented candles, the products we use to help us enjoy summer can measurably degrade our indoor air quality (IAQ). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from these everyday items can accumulate to concentrations much higher indoors than outdoors, triggering everything from mild irritation to more serious long-term health consequences [1][1]

The Smoky Side of Summer

The Smoky Side of Summer

Grills firing up. Fireworks cracking overhead. Citronella candles glowing on the patio. Personally, I'm excited for the festivities. But some of summer's most familiar moments come with a little smoke.

We usually think of these as outdoor activities, which makes them feel separate from the air inside our homes. But your indoor air doesn't exist in a hermetically-sealed bubble. Smoke can drift through open doors, screened porches, cracked windows, attached garages, and nearby air intakes. And once those tiny particles make their way inside, they can linger longer than the fun.
